Shane’s pride at BMF Ambassador role
Talasey Group’s Southern Sales Director Shane McCormick has spoken about the pride he feels at being named a Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) Ambassador.
Shane is one of a small band of industry people who the BMF has called on to champion the builders’ merchants sector in a bid to attract talented young people to consider it as a career.
The BMF has launched a campaign to target careers advisers and signpost people to its new website (www.buildingmaterialscareers.com) to share their experiences with young people considering their first career steps.
As a BMF Ambassador, Shane’s voluntary role includes being a spokesperson for the industry, sharing his personal experiences at schools and colleges, and attending apprenticeship and careers fairs.
Speaking about his new ambassadorial role, Shane said it’s a privilege to be part of a team that is looking to raise the profile of a ‘hidden’ industry that often gets overlooked when it comes to career choices, particularly for young people.
“I’ve been involved in different parts of the construction industry all my working life, and I know how pivotal merchants are in making sure the industry runs like clockwork,” said Shane. “In many ways, being a merchant is a hidden career because a lot of young people leaving education are signposted to specific trades – not a generalist like a merchant.
“We rely on merchants for what we need, when we need it, backed up with professional support and great product knowledge – and good merchants really make a positive difference to tradespeople right across the spectrum of the construction industry.
“I’m therefore very proud to be part of a team of volunteers who are championing the builders’ merchant sector and raising the profile of what could be a very fulfilling, interesting and rewarding career path.”
Shane is already reporting success as a BMF Ambassador, as his daughter Mollie is looking at an apprenticeship with a national merchant chain.
“There are more opportunities for merchants than meet the eye, as most people only encounter the teams that work on the counter or in the yard, but, like most businesses, there are a whole host of functions – such as accounts, operations and marketing – that merchants need to run their businesses successfully.
“When you look at it, working in the merchant industry is an exciting prospect and one that I hope my daughter will love – and I’m happy to tell my story to as many young people as possible because it’s a great career.”
Taking on the role on a voluntary basis is all the more remarkable because Shane is also a very active fundraiser for Cancer Research UK and Band of Builders, as he is currently under treatment for melanoma.
Shane, who describes himself as a Cancer Warrior, is taking part in the Great South Run in October for Cancer Research UK and Band of Builders to give back to two organisations that have done so much for him, his family and people in the industry battling all types of cancer in the UK.
